Vehicle Tracking

Vehicle tracking has many different uses by different people in society. It works by installing an electronic device that can be picked up by a monitoring device into a vehicle or a fleet of vehicles, and this information can be interpreted into a map showing the movements of the vehicle(s), or by being visualised by some other means. It is a way for people to keep track of the movements of whatever it is that is important about the vehicle, be it the driver, goods stored on board, or the vehicle itself.

The most common use of vehicle tracking is by fleet operators for fleet tracking, dispatching and security. Vehicle tracking is also used a great deal in the USA by urban transit agencies. It helps to monitor schedules, trigger automated announcements on board buses and trains, and change buses’ destination signs at the end of a route.

The benefits of using vehicle tracking are that buses, for example, are encouraged even more than usual to adhere to the timetable that they are following, and it also makes it easier for the bus company to acknowledge and quickly deal with any problems that may be unplanned. There are arguably negative points to make, with regards privacy: it could be said that vehicle tracking on a civilian vehicle with no proper reason to be a violation of human rights. It is important, therefore, to keep vehicle tracking under control.
